We flew from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia, Argentina on Feb 23. Ushuaia is billed as 'Fin del Mundo,' the end of the world. It's the southernmost city in the world, and one of the gateways to the Antarctic continent. Ushuaia got it's start as a penal colony for Great Britain in the 19th century. The first roads and buildings and utility infrastructure were built by the prisoners. There are said to be few, if any escapes from here as it is so cold and harsh and remote.
In fact, here's someone trying to escape INTO this prison cell with Jan...
An artist on display at the prison, which is now a museum, uses the Argentine flag as a motif in her paintings and sculptures...
We took a couple of walks in Tierra del Fuego National Park on Feb 24. Our guide, Carlos, is a very positive sort, and intimately connected with nature. He had us stand still and not talk or take pictures for a couple of minutes on one of our walks, to appreciate the sounds and smells of this special place. Carlos is all about living and appreciating life to the fullest, and loves to get hugs.
so I was known for the rest of the trip as 'Jack'
a flightless bird!
We got our passports stamped at the Beagle Canal, and in Tierra del Fuego National Park. I understand Darwin sailed through here without a passport.
Meanwhile, our ship was in harbor here being readied to take us on our Antarctic adventure. Carlos wanted us to see it as an expedition, rather than a cruise. We would find it to be the best of both.
We boarded the Corinthian II the afternoon of Feb 24, and set out through the Beagle Channel for Antarctica. We had our first shipboard dinner with Rick and Linda from Breckenridge, CO.
